Late Night "Fluff" Fire at Coatesville Scrap

By Deputy Chief Frank Dowlin
February 6, 2010

Shortly after 11pm on February 6, 2010 the Modena Fire Company along with Engine 75 from the Mittel Steel Fire Company was dispatched to the Coatesville Scrap Iron on South 1st Ave in South Coatesville Borough for a reported Fluff fire.

Fluff is the finished product after a vehicle is scrapped it consists of foam, rubber, and aluminum broken down. To obtain the scrap metal from cars, vehicles are drained of fluids and dismantled and then the vehicle body is shredded. Metal pieces are magnetically picked up from the shredding pile. The waste and residue leftover is called auto shredder residue or auto "fluff."

Chief Perine a long time employee of the scrap yard was first on scene and advised the engine to hold on the hard road so he could get the dozer and plow into the burning pile. Deputy Chief Dowlin arrived in his work truck equipped with a plow and was directed by Chief Perine to start making his way into the fire.

After about ten minutes of plowing by both chiefs and a bobcat from Mittel Steel the engine was advised to make their way to the fire and go in service with a 1 3/4 hand line and tools to extinguish the fire.

These fire are more common in the summer mouths with high humidity however with the 20 inch of snow that fell in the past 24 hours the snow acted as an insulator, not allowing the pile to breath and eventually self combusting.

The fire was placed under control around 2330 by Chief Perine. All units were place available at 0004 hours.
