On Sunday, March 2nd, 2008 available members of our active crew gathered for a picture with there new firefighting gear which was ordered back in December last year. The purchased 28 complete sets of this new gear were made possible with a Federal Grant we received in December of 2007.

The Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program is an important component of the Administration's larger, coordinated effort to strengthen the Nation's overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and fire related hazards.
These grant awards aim to enhance first responders' ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel, with respect to fire-related hazards.

Using a competitive process overseen by fire service subject matter experts, AFG grants are awarded to applicants whose requests best address the priorities of the AFG program.

The new fire gear was delivered from TheFireStore this past week. Each firefighter received a new firefighting turnout coat, firefighting turnout pants with suspenders, a pair of firefighting gloves, a nomex fire hood, leather fire boots, and a firefighting helmet.

New LED flashlights were also purchased from TheFireStore the LED flashlights came complete with charging systems for each firefighter and will provide long bulb life and produce high energy light. The cost of the flashlights was over the amount we received for the gear from the Federal Grant and was purchased by the Modena Fireman's Relief Association.

This marks the first time in the 85 year history of the Modena Fire Company that each active firefighter has received brand new gear all at one time.

The cost to outfit each firefighter with the equipment provided in this grant is approximately $2,500 which does not include breathing apparatus. We would have not been able to complete this project without the assistance of Federal funding.

Special thanks to our salesman Jay Able from TheFireStore for all his help over the past few months. Great job on keeping up with the gear status making sure it didn't take a "YEAR".
