Company Recieves Visit from Local Cub Scouts

By Fire Chief Frank Dowlin
November 13, 2014

On Thursday evening November 13, 2014 the fire company received a visit from a local Cub Scout Pack. This visit had been planned for several weeks with the sole purpose being to talk to the kids about fire safety.

The evening started with Chief Dowlin talking with the cub scouts and their parents about fire safety in the home, some of the things discussed were calling 911, smoke detectors, home escape plans, and what to do in case they awoke in a smoke filled room. Then talked about the personal protective equipment that a firefighter wear, Captain Corle got into his turnout gear and dawned an Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to show the kids what a firefighter would look like and sound like when they arrived at the home. They then discussed some of the equipment used by firefighters like hooks, bars, rescue tools, heat guns, AED's and Thermal Imaging Camera's (TIC).

After a question and answer session the Cub Scouts received their own Modena Fire Company fire helmet. After the chief was done the scouts went with ambulance personnel to go over some basic first aid and look at the ambulance, the pack then went out to the engine room to walk around and sat on the apparatus the kids were told about the trucks and their capabilities. Many additional questions were asked and answered both from the children and the parents throughout the remainder of the night.

The Modena Fire Company would like to thanks the pack leaders, the parents, and most of all the Cub Scouts for visiting our station and making the evening very enjoyable for the firefighters. Our door is always open to you thanks again.
