Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Fire Chief Frank Dowlin
March 13, 2021

It is with a heavy heart and our deepest regrets that the Modena Fire Company announces the passing of past Fire Chief John Lavender March 13, 2021.

Big John as we all called him was a life member of the company. Joining the company in 1968 made him one of the longest running members the company currently had. Big John served as Fire Chief in 1988 and 1989. Chief Lavender held many positions over the years his most recent was head trustee and Chief Engineer.

Big John remained active up till 2 years ago and could have been seen on the pump panel, or behind the wheel of the ambulance.

Big John was well known in the community for his BBQ Chicken, our barbecues were actually advertised as Big John BBQ, John was passionate about that chicken and over the years taught many others how to do it right, He was even known to help other fire companies with their barbecues.

Over the years Big John was a leader, mentor, and most importantly a great friend to everyone.

Chief Dowlin says “Big John was one of them go to guys he would do anything for the company and was always there if I needed some advice or direction, our hearts are broken, he will be surly missed”.

The Officers and Members of the Modena Fire Company would like to extend our sincere condolences to the Lavender family, you will be in our thoughts and prayers, and we thank you for sharing John with us all these years.

Funeral arrangements are as follows

Viewing Saturday March 20th 2021 at the Hunt Memorial Chapel at 5th and Lincoln in Coateville from 0900-1045
Service will start at 1100 (Covid restriction only allowing 45 inside, believed that family will be most of that)
A Fireman/truck and Family procession will follow going through Modena past firehouse and back to Hunts.

Any Fire Department wishing to attend contact Chief Dowlin at 610-587-2045, were asking do to room only one piece per company
