By Fire Chief Frank Dowlin
March 15, 2008

On Saturday, March 15th, 2008 at 1642 the Modena Fire Company was dispatched to assist Westwood at the Harrison House of Coatesville for a fire alarm activation.

Chief 44 responded at 1644 and was advised that the alarm had activated on the 4th floor of the building.

Rescue 44 responded at 1645. Just as the Rescue was leaving the station, the Chester County 911 Center received a second call from the premises stating that the call was a "false alarm" and no fire department services would be required on the scene. Until this information was confirmed, Chief McWilliams requested that Rescue 44 continue to the sceneand held Engine 37-2 on station.

Lieutenant Dill arrived on the scene and reported a smoke condition on the 3rd and 4th floors. The source was quickly traced to burnt cooking, however the smoke would have to be removed from the building.

Assistant Chief Sly contacted Modena Deputy Chief Perine to request their assistance at the scene with additional exhaust fans.

Westwood firefighters set up fans on the 4th floor to help remove the haze and odor. Modena personnel arrived and assisted with ventilation with more fans.

After several minutes of this operation, most of the smoke had been removed from the building and all units cleared the scene at 1732.

Units: Engine 37-2
