By Fire Chief Frank Dowlin
September 7, 2008

On Sunday, September 7th, 2008 Engine 37-2 and a crew from Modena left the firehouse at 1130am and headed for Kennett Fire Company, Station 24 to standby for their personnel which were taking part in the annual Kennett Mushroom Festival.

Kennett Square has long been known as "The Mushroom Capital of the World," with more mushroom growing operations concentrated in the Southern Chester County area than any other area in the United States. The Mushroom Festival promotes their favorite crop (MUSHROOMS), Kennett Square, and tourism in Southern Chester County. Over 100,000 visitors come from far and wide to experience this "Small Town America" Festival.

The Kennett Fire Company is heavily involved in the festival each year, requiring crews and apparatus from other fire companies to assist them with providing emergency services protection to the community throughout the event.

Engine 37-2 was requested to provide a standby shift from 1200-1800 on the Sunday of the event.

Crews from Westwood and Lima Fire Company's awaited our arrival as they stood by for the am shift 0600-1200.

Chief Dowlin, Captain Wallace, Lieutenant Brown, Firefighter/Emt Lowary, Firefighter Corle, and Firefighter Huggins were on standby with crews from the Spring Ford Rescue Company Station 72.

Throughout the afternoon, firefighters took time to relax, a few even took the long walk up town to the festival, as the one o'clock hour came everyone found a seat in the crew room for the much awaited start of the 2008 football season, crew cheered in joy as the Eagles stooped the Rams 38-3.

Fortunately, no calls were received for service throughout the shift. Engine 37-2 returned to Modena once Kennett crews finished there assignments at the festival.
